Rider from Holly Hill Equestrian Team Qualifies for Nationals
Mandy Helbert, a high school junior in the Holly Hill Farm Equestrian Team in Avon Lake, Ohio qualified for the IEA National Championship in Syracuse, New York after placing third in her division at the Zone Five Championship.
The Interscholastic Equestrian Association, or IEA, is an organization devoted to providing the opportunity to compete in hunt seat horseback riding competitions to students in grades six through twelve. Throughout the season, riders compete at shows in an effort to qualify for the Regional Finals by earning at least fifteen points. In order for a high school or middle school team to qualify, it must attain at least twenty team points (separate from those earned by individual riders). Riders or teams placing first or second in the Regional Finals move on to the Zone Championships for the chance to compete at Nationals.
The Holly Hill Farm Equestrian Team is a part of Zone Five, which includes teams from the states of Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky. This team, formed just last year, has sent riders to compete at the Zone Championships twice in a row. Last year, Mia Licciardi was the sole rider representing the team at Zones, but this year five riders made it that far. Those riders are Dana Bandi, Maddie Bruening, Kristen Hards, Mandy Helbert, and Mia Licciardi. Mandy Helbert placed third in the Junior Varsity Novice division, enabling her to move on to Nationals.
The HHF Equestrian Team, coached by Lisa Anzenberger and run out of Holly Hill Farm in Avon Lake, is made up of twelve riders of varying ages. The HHF team does a series of fundraisers to allow more students to compete, and accepts riders of varying ability levels to compete in the different divisions of the IEA. Every year, the team improves and looks forward to sending even more riders to Nationals in the future.
